Pregnancy affects the body in numerous ways and causes many changes especially to the patterns of weight bearing and the structures around the pelvis.

Why do pregnant women visit an osteopath?
- Back and neck pain as a result of extra strain on the spine
- Nausea and heartburn due to upward tension on the stomach and diaphragm.
- Circulatory issues: Swelling of the hands, legs and feet.
- A previous history of back problems that may affect the pregnancy or birth.
- Headaches.
- Advice on posture post pregnancy i.e. changing and carrying bub.
How can osteopathy help during pregnancy? Treatment by an osteopath helps support the body through the above changes, especially during the mid to final stages of the pregnancy. An osteopath will aim to maintain the body's balance having a positive effect on the circulatory, nervous and lymphatic systems throughout the pregnancy. Treatment by an osteopath is gentle, and non-invasive.
How does an Osteopath treat pregnant woman?
- Stretching techniques: to increase blood flow and improve flexibility of joints and muscles.
- Articulation techniques: joints are moved passively through their range of motion.
- Soft tissue techniques: release tightness on the muscles by being made to work against resistance.
- Providing posture and exercise advice.

New-borns can benefit from osteopathic treatment: Birth is a very physical and perhaps stressful process on a baby’s body. It can cause tension or pinching in the delicate membranes that cover the brain and nervous system. Overstrain of tissues and compression of joints in the head, neck and upper back may also occur as a result. This may affect the nerves which come from the base of the skull which are responsible for body functions such as feeding, digestion and breathing, and may cause other imbalances in the rest of the body.

Such problems may well be accentuated if there has been a difficult presentation such as a very quick or perhaps a prolonged labour, a breach delivery or, if the delivery has been assisted with forceps or ventouse suction.
Osteopathic treatment is gentle, safe and effective for babies and children. Very specific, skilled, light pressure is applied where necessary to assist the natural ability of the body to release stresses and tensions.
Signs to look out for that may indicate a need for an osteopathic check up include:
- Irritability & difficulty settling
- Disturbed sleep patterns
- Feeding difficulties such as problems with attachment and sucking
- Digestive issues – colic, excessive possiting, wind or reflux
- Obvious asymmetries in head shape, bruising or swelling over the scalp or face
- Recurrent infections such as 'snuffly' nose, coughing, wheezing and recurrent ear infections
- Asymmetry in movement – a preference to feed from one side, only turning the head one way
